New Colors for the Canon, A Celebration of African American and Hispanic Song Composers

Join us for this song festival that seeks to amplify the voices of BIPOC singers and composers. Throughout history, the music of people of color has been co-opted, appropriated, or ignored. Through three performances, the Voice-Opera Division aims to increase the repertoire commonly used to include more compositions by composers of color while honoring their songs and the stories they tell. The program, in partnership with BIPOC alumni, hopes to inspire students from all walks of life to research, learn and perform these and other disenfranchised works with the same dedication as other staple voice literature.

The festival features two daytime performances in Gildenhorn from 12:30 - 1:50 PM on Tuesday, Feb 7 and Thursday, Feb 9, and one evening performance in Gildenhorn on Feb 8 at 8 PM.

Ms. Evans will be a featured guest artist on a mini-festival celebrating the work of Black composers with several UMD alumni.
